Rail Manufacturer Protects Work Environment with the installation of DCE LEV Control Benches

Introduction

William Cook Rail, a Leeds based rail engineering business, specialises in the design, manufacture and overhaul of safety-critical components for the global rail industry. Their expertise and success stems from their focus to delivery high quality and reliable products to their valued customers.
With a requirement to protect their workforce and environment from exposure to hazardous airborne substances, William Cook Rail turned to Dust Control Environmental (DCE) to develop a tailored extraction system to suit their specific needs.

Project Requirements

The production and finishing of cast steel rail products generates welding fumes and grinding dust posing health risks to employees. These airborne substances, if inhaled can cause serious health issues such as asthma, depleted lung function and inflammation as well as being carcinogenic. William Cook Rail therefore required an improved method of capturing these particulates at source to maintain good air quality in the work environment.

Consideration needed to be given to the size and positioning of the welding and grinding operations which necessitated the extraction to be re-circulated as clean air back into the workplace, rather than externally, to avoid any structural change and complicated ducting.

How DCE met the Requirements

Following a site survey, DCE designed bespoke LEV (Local Exhaust Ventilation) control benches with the integration of extract hooding, previously absent, to optimize the collection of dust and fumes at source.

The scheme includes the Typhoon reverse jet cartridge dust collector which, for greater fume and particle separation, has been equipped with a secondary grade H13 HEPA filter bank (High Efficiency Particulate Absorbing Filter) ensuring that at least 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns will be filtered out, lowering the emissions to an exacting level so the clean air can be safely recirculated back into the factory.

The Benefits

The installation of the DCE Typhoon extraction system, along with the LEV benches and integrated hoods will provide William Cook Rail with a cleaner and safer working environment.

The process of recirculating the filtered air back into the factory will conserve energy by maintaining the building’s heat.

By engaging with DCE to provide a compliant, high performing dust extraction system, William Cook Rail demonstrate their commitment to employee well-being and environmental protection.

Client Feedback

Barry Swift – Executive Director at William Cook Rail commented “Working with DCE on this project was effortless. Martin Gill and his team quicky understood the issues to hand and proposed a solution which was both effective and on budget. The installation was smooth and professional and now our employees are benefitting from the improved working conditions. I would strongly recommend to any business requiring assistance with LEV systems to contact DCE.”
