Introduction

Paramount Powders (UK) Ltd., are a well-established, specialist powder coatings manufacturer with over 30 years of experience. They operate from their 45,000 sq. ft. manufacturing facility in Hayes, Middlesex.
Manufacturing Polyester, Epoxy and Polyurethane Powders, they were keen, as a part of a 3 phased plan, to upgrade and renew their dust extraction systems. They engaged with dust control specialists, Dust Control Environmental (DCE) for the provision of a compliant and efficient dust extraction improvement project.

Project Requirements

  • Paramount Powders required a high-performance extraction system that could seamlessly integrate with their existing equipment. Due to the nature of the pigment dust it was critical that the solution met stringent ATEX compliance standards.

In addition to the system itself, installation and ducting were also required. A key challenge of the project was providing a compliant extraction system powerful enough to handle the dust load that would fit within the constraints of the available site footprint.

How DCE met the Requirements

An experienced DCE engineer conducted a site survey at Paramount Powders to assess the extraction requirements. The initial recommendation was to install 2no. DCE Typhoon 12 units to meet the necessary performance criteria. However, upon reviewing the available installation space, it became clear that the footprint was insufficient to accommodate the Typhoon 12s.

To address the space problem, DCE proposed the design and supply of four compact Typhoon 6 units instead, fitting neatly onto the exterior concrete pad. The Typhoon is a down flow air wash system that benefits from a reverse jet cleaning operation.

For safe and compliant operation, both Typhoon 6 units were manufactured in accordance with ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU. The system design includes top-mounted explosion relief and ATEX-certified flame propagation dampers, specifically engineered for metallic dust applications. Anti-static filter media was also specified to meet safety standards.

DCE managed the removal of existing equipment and completed the installation of the Typhoon 6 units along with the associated extraction ductwork, ensuring full compliance with HSG 258 guidelines. A handy 100 Litre waste collection and removal bin was integrated to ensure easy and save removal of the collected particulate waste. The powder coating pigment was provided by Paramount Powders themselves.

Commissioning was carried out by DCE’s Field Support Engineer, who also provided operational training to a designated Paramount Powders team member.

The Benefits

With the two Typhoon 6 units now fully installed and operational, Dust Control Environmental’s client is experiencing the following key benefits:

  • High performing and compliant dust extraction
  • ATEX-certified operational safety
  • Enhanced protection to workforce and equipment.
  • Energy efficiency.
  • Reverse jet cleaning allowing true 24/7 operation.
